Let’s make maths fun with easy to do maths around the house!

There are so many maths tasks you can do with items you already have. Here are some of my favourite activities:

## Playing cards

• For younger children, play snap when you get the same number
• For younger children, roll a dice and find a matching playing card
• Double the number
• Double it and double it again!
• Find different ways to make 12 using two/three/four cards
• Find different ways to make 15 (link to Cribbage)
• Choose two cards and add them together
• Choose two cards, add them together, choose another two, add them together –> which pair is bigger?
• Make a clock with the cards

## Recipes

• Halving the recipe – so you cook for 2 people not 4
• Doubling a recipe
• Converting amounts – e.g. give them a recipe all in kg and they have to convert it to grams or vice versa
• Measuring amounts accurately following a recipe – 400ml
• Total time it takes to make something – time each part e.g. preparation, cooking time and work out the total time it takes
• Weigh one banana – approximately, how much do you think 10 bananas would weigh?
• If I need 50g of pasta per person, how many grams do I need for 7 people?

## Clocks

• How many minutes in an hour? In half an hour? (for older children: how many minutes in a day, a week, a month?)
• Count in 5’s round the clock face
• How many seconds in a minute? In two, three? In one hour?
• If I start maths at 10:00 and finish at 10:20, how many minutes is that?
• I start a TV show at 10:15 and it finishes at 11:30, how many minutes is that? How many hours and minutes?

## Dice

• For younger children, roll the dice, add one, take away one (or use terms 1 less, 1 more)
• Roll two dice, add them together
• Roll 3 dice, add them together. Can you do it in your head? If not, how could you work it out?
• Roll two dice – this becomes you tens and units number. E.g. if I roll a 2 and 3 my number is 23. Can you double it?

## Coins

• Make 6p in as many ways as you can
• Make 24p in as many ways as you can. Can you set up a system to record this? Can you do it in an organised way?
• If I spend £12.37 at the shop and pay with a £20 note, how much change do I get?
• Create items for a shop (or get your child to do it – see Creative Learning Prompts) and label them with prices (e.g. up to 10p for Year 1, up to 20p Year 2… Year 6 will be £15.57). Find me two items I could buy for 16p… or 30p, or £50.
• Probability and coins – (Year 5/6) Put different coins in the bag and record the probability of taking out a certain coin. Remember, this changes if you don’t put it back in.
• Counting in 2’s, 5’s (using 2p coins, and 5p coins).
• Start at 20p (made with 10 x 2p coins) and take away 2 coins each time, counting back until you get to 0

• For problem solving activities – I love these problems – you have to download the whole pack! However, they are fun and worth printing to encourage mathematical conversations.
